Rachel's 9.9 Discussion Questions

1) Mumby and Stohl (1996) argued that organizational communication scholars share a unique sense of identity and community that is framed by the problematics of voice, rationality, organization, and an organization-society relationship, as well as their recognition of the “constitutive power of communication” (p. 68), and support for theoretical and methodological plurality.

  • To what do you attribute the lack of paradigmatic pluralism in other communication studies sub-disciplines and/or academia in general?
  • What are the consequences of one perspective dominating the others?

2) When discussing the problematic of voice, these authors contended that the development of Jameson’s (1984) concept of the “crisis of representation” challenges the “dominant orthodoxy of social science and its conceptions of knowledge and truth” (p. 55).

  • In what ways do even interpretive and critical researchers continue to rely on postpositivistic assumptions about knowledge and truth?
  • How might postmodern critiques of social science research inform new goals for organizational communication scholars?
