Making Choices

Putnam's (1983) chapter makes the distinction between Functionalism and Interpretivisim, and the impact on viewing/understanding organizational communication. As a researcher, do you identify with the Functionalist or Interpretivist approaches? And why?

Hawes (1974) describes and reviews published organizational-behavior books, describing social-science perspectives and then goes on to describe the notion that communication behavior and organizations are distinct entities. After reading both Hawes (1974) and Putnam (1983), I started to think about how and why people view organizations and the act of organizing differently. How do you view an organization and/or the act of organizing? How do you think this affects how you do research or what you research regarding organizations and organizational communication?
