Mumby and Stohl introduced the four problematics, voice, rationality, organization and the organization-society relationship, which gives away a concept of organizational communication as an object study and the difference from other fields. Then the eight metaphors by of organizational communication developed the disciplinary identity of this study also.
Exploring the current research field and broaden the paradigms would bring new theoretical understandings of Organizational Communication. Will the emerge of Action theory and Translation enlarge the influence in Organizational Communication in the long run? The reinterpretation of the Action Theory emphasized very strongly the material grounding of communication in a context of purposive work, within a physical situation, and mediated by technology, which reminds me of the emerge of Organizational Communication from Tompkins’s study on the Marshall Space Center. Technology acts as one of the leading powers of the current society, so how does the changing technology act upon the organizational cultures, self-organizing systems and workplace democracy etc.and will it serve as the “retro-research” trend in the future Organizational Communication study?
