The Conceptual Foundation article by Deetz very well defines the contrasting dimensions (figure 1.1) and further explains interpretive studies, normative studies, critical studies, and dialogic studies. The author suggests the use of critical studies and diagnostic studies in the field of business and management. My question based on this understanding is as follows:
I am studying co-opetitive relationships between organizations (more specifically suppliers). Will they be considered under critical studies where the concern is often with asymmetry and domination in organizational decision making (which from my perspective will be a macro analysis)? Or would they be considered under critical studies as there focus is on more micro political processes and the joined nature of power and resistance? The difficulty that I am facing is to decide which study out of these two to choose. Will it depend on unit of analysis i.e. firm level or individual level or are there other determinants because to me they look too thin to differentiate?
