This week’s readings provide us with multiple perspectives on emotion, while also illustrating that normative, interpretive, critical, and dialogical discourses do not operate in a vacuum. Specifically, Kramer and Hess (2002) based their study on an interpretive perspective via normative methodology, and Mumby and Putnam (1992) conducted a poststructuralist feminist reading of Simon’s “bounded rationality” construct, demonstrating areas of overlap in critical and postmodern approaches to organizational communication research.
- What unique insights into the phenomenon of emotion are offered by each perspective?
- What are the limitations of each perspective when thinking about emotion and organizational communication?
- How would one’s failure to engage in multiperspectivalism limit her/his understanding of emotion and organizational communication?
