I really enjoyed our readings for this week. I found the tension between emotionality and rationality very intriguing. After reading Kramer & Hess (2002) I began to wonder how we use “masking” to hide our true emotions, specifically how we mask negative emotions. Applying this concept of masking to Dougherty & Drumheller’s (2006) article, I wonder then, how masking might be used to describe how employees manage the rationality/emotionality duality in the workplace? Any thoughts? Could these authors have included the concept of masking to answer either of their research questions or explain participant results?
After reading Mumby & Putnam’s (1992) article on a post-structuralist feminist reading of bounded rationality and then Dougherty & Drumheller’s (2006) article on sense-making and emotions in organizations I began to wonder how Dogherty & Drumheller’s study might have looked if it looked at how women and men mange the rationality/emotionality duality in the workplace differently. My question for class then is as follows: what do you think we would find if we took a feminist approach to exploring how employees manage the rationality/emotionality duality in the workplace?
