Getachew's Questions - 10/28

In an effort to show the private/public dichotomy Martin (1990) makes a number of substitutions to construct other versions of the Caesarean story. I appreciate the role of reconstruction as a way to think about feasibility of alternative ways. I wondered if this kind of substitution is an ethical thing to do in research. Among the research approaches we have seen in this course, where does “deconstruction” fall? How different is it from the critical approach?

2. How significantly does Kirby and Krone’s discourse analysis through the frame of Structuration Theory differ from the deconstruction approach Martin (1990) employed? Do Kirby and Krone claim they have not used deconstruction of discourse somehow? How would Kirby and Krone’s research benefit from using deconstruction of discourses and how might the Martin research has benefited from use of Structuration Theory as a frame?
